What is Main Street?
It is a 25 year old successful program of downtown revitalization chartered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Co-ordinated by a local manger, the program is built on a four-point approach:
- Organization: Identifies and enlists support from elected officials, community leaders, and interested citizens; constantly strives to broaden its base and build partnerships.
- Promotion: Improves and unifies the town image; markets it as a destination through special events, advertising, and other promotions.
- Design: Works toward improving physical appearance and function of buildings, signs, streetscapes, and public areas.
- Economic Restructuring: Supports, retains, and recruits new and complementary businesses; finds innovative uses for existing buildings.
